Arrows Maze: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Arrows Maze comes from http://www.reel-design.de/
The object is to place the green arrows so that your blue square will get to the red square.

One very interesting feature: your man can go through the ceiling and emerge from the floor.  This torus feature will become an integral part of the solutions to many of the puzzles.

There are 32 levels and they seem kind of easy at first. Until you get to #11. That's when the torus feature explodes at you.  Great design.

Look at the 4th image. See the orange arrows? They rotate 90 degrees every time your man passes over one of them.

I solved the first 29 and got stuck on 30.

I'm not sure if the developers saw this, but I found a very easy solution for level 24.  In that puzzle, 13 arrows are provided. I only used 2.

In the past, we've seen many maze puzzle apps with all sorts of features like this one has. Neverheless Arrows Maze is a fine mixture of challenging fun with just the right graphics.

The Impossible Cube Maze Game: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

The Impossible Cube Maze Game is a crazy hard maze puzzle app game!

'You begin your journey in a corner of a cube filled giant cube.  Trek to the center to discover the power within the cube.'

I played this for about 10 minutes and got very disoriented & lost.  I did not make it to the center of the 5x5x5 cube maze.

I know some of you who have been following this blog think that I can solve every single puzzle. But that is not always the case.

If you get to the middle, please take a screen shot and send it to me.

Update from Robert Dancer who follows this blog: Interesting... Color schemes are both useful and disorienting...! I usually have a very good sense of 3D, but in this case I had to draw a map...!
:-)
Incidentally, the centre cube flashes when you see it through a doorway, and when you go into it it flashes a lot, and then tells you that you have unlocked something (probably the next level) and then shows you the screenshot...!

Unlock Me Free: puzzle app game

Unlock Me Free is a free puzzle app game.  Looks a lot like Rush Hour and its clones.

I was not able to open this program!  I deleted it and then re-downloaded it.  Maybe it's because I'm still on iOS 6.

Nevertheless, the author says that there are 80 levels that will take hundreds of hours to solve.  I'm skeptical.

Simpl: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Ash Oakenfold recently contacted me about his new puzzle app game: Simpl. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/simpl/id672601351?ls=1&mt=8

The object is to roll the blue square onto the yellow square. I was a bit confused at first.  Then I read the description: think of the blue square as a 2x1 cube.  So, it's a rolling 3D cuboid puzzle.

I'm not sure how many levels there are, but it's a lot, maybe 75.

Having done a few thousand of these in the past, I'm not enthusiastic about doing more, but they are well constructed, from the ones I did.

As Ash said in his note to me: 'there's no dazzle'. What would really be helpful would be a 3-d rendering.

Look for Bloxorz.  It's an old flash game to play on your computer.  About 10 years ago a student told me about it - I liked it so much I gave him 10 extra points on a test.

The greatest rolling cube puzzle that I have seen is QVoid. I reviewed it about 2 years ago. Trust me, it's awesome.

Another kick-ass rolling cube puzzler is Cubler 2.

Ash: please dazzle us in the future.

Shuffler Game Free: free puzzle app game

There are way too many 15 puzzle app games out there.

However, Shuffler Game Free is extremely interesting and worth your time. Of course, the object is to restore order to the numbered tiles. If you want those tiles to form a picture, so be it. The numbers are tough enough.

You can select your puzzle to: swap 2 pieces, rotate 4 pieces, swap pieces via columns and rows.

There is a paid full version for those who want all the other features.

Shuffler Game Free is smart, challenging and a winner.

Sokoban Cargo: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Right around 1995 I got a game called Boxworld. The first 13 levels were free. After that, I mailed $5 to the developer and he sent me a disc for the other 87 levels.  By far, the best $5 I spent that year.

There are lots of similar puzzles and the generic name is Sokoban.

Sokoban Cargo has 24 free levels. #4 is hard! I'm stuck.

Oh yes, the objective: push the boxes onto the x targets. You may not push more than 1 box. If you push a box into a corner, you're stuck!

Aeon Beam: free puzzle app game

Aeon Beam is a free puzzle app game. The object is to untangle the strings.

We've seen this type of puzzle app many times.  The first time I did it was about 8 or 9 years ago. There was a terrific on-line app. I forgot what it was called.
Aeon Beam has something like 100 levels. You cannot jump around. I did about 20 of them.

Unblock My Ship: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

This is the latest ripoff of Rush Hour.

A note to puzzle app developers: please be original. I hope nobody downloads this.

Pet Rescue Saga: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Pet Rescue Saga comes from the makers of Candy Crush Saga. Candy Crush has become a mega monster hit. Previously, I stated that I would delete it. But I still have not. I'm on level 112.

Pet Rescue Saga is based on an old concept. I don't think it's particularly good. However, I saw an advertisement last weekend during Saturday Night Live. Has there ever been another tv commercial for a puzzle app game?

Getting back to Candy Crush: every day I see people on the subways playing it. I've been asking them what level they're on. Then I ask if it's taken over their life.

Candy Crush & Pet Rescue both are legitimate puzzle app games. However, there is an element of luck which can be annoying. Also, both games have timers which forbid you from playing very long. Unless of course you pay. Or change the date and time forward on your iphone or ipad.

Mystery Lighthouse: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Mystery Lighthouse is  not a new puzzle app game. It came out about a year ago. It's similar to Myst. If you haven't played that, well, you simply must do so!

Mystery Lightouse: you must walk around the island and figure things out, pick up tools & coins and ultimately find out what happened to your uncle Augustus who is/was the lighthouse keeper.

You can solve the whole mystery in about 1 - 2 hours.  My son, who is 11, really liked it.

Super Squares: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Super Squares is a free puzzle app game that is very similar to Flow.  The object is to connect the two red squares and the two blue squares etc, while sweeping over all of the stars.

See the brick squares? Those are obstacles. You may explode them with your finite number of bombs.

There is always enough bombs to solve any puzzle. But if you're bad at topology, you can purchase bombs.

There are 300 free levels. I solve about 90 of them in about 40 minutes.  If you've been following this blog, you know that I've done thousands of topology problems. So I found these to be really easy.

My one qualm with Super Squares: I collected all of the stars and made all the connections but  I sometimes forgot to connect the last square to the home square.

Qwhizzle: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Normally, when I see math puzzles, I'm skeptical.  Qwhizzle is a free puzzle app game similar to the card game 24.

Look at the first image. See the 3 lit up on the bottom? That's your target.  To get it, you must swipe 6-3 in that order.  This is not a 'tap the numbers' action.

Scrutinize the bottom of the first image. You are given 10 targets and a limited amount of time.  The tiles cannot be swiped more than once.

I've spent a couple of hours on Qwhizzle. I am impressed at the level of difficulty, particularly on the 3x3 grids. It's simple math, but the time pressure makes it fun and challenging.

Here's a slight negative: in order to play the 3x3 grids, you must accumulate a certain number of points on the 2x2's. Of course, you can purchase points and stars with real money.

Qwhizzle may be the best math puzzle app game of 2013.

Light Em Up comes from http://www.effectappsmobile.com/

The object is to guide the balls of fire onto the wooden crates at the same time. They move together as you swipe north, south east or west.  The black regions can stop one of the flames from moving.  The blue regions represent water that will extinguish your flames
Light Em Up has 155 levels.  25 are free. I've done all the free levels and am working my way through the paid ones.

Definitely a winner.  Did I mention that Light Em Up is a free puzzle app game?

BrainSquare: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

BrainSquare is a free puzzle app game. The object is to line up red squares to connect the red dots.  Then do the same for white dots and yellow dots.

There are 20 free levels and I've solved them all. But I don't truly understand the mechanics/rules.

The graphics are definitely slick. I think I'm going to redo them to get a better feel.

Dice Jockey: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Visionaries 777 recently contacted me about his new puzzle app game Dice Jockey.
There are 4 distinct games. In the Puzzle category I did all 20 levels. The object is to roll the cubes around until they match on top. I was a little lost at first, not understanding why my 3 dice which all had 4 on top and were next to each other didn't work.  Here's the deal: when you have 3 dice on the board, you must get them all to be 3. Logical right? To make things a little easier, 1 on top acts as a wild card.

As I said, I solved all 20 levels. But I did not solve them in the minimum # of moves. I'm wondering.....if the minimum number of moves involves a wild card.
The other games require you to think and roll rapidly. Clear the board of matching dice while more dice are added to the board randomly.  If you've been following this puzzle app blog, you know I'm not into timed puzzles. Nevertheless, this survival/time puzzle element is cool. Look at the last image. See the six 6's? They have matched. They do not disappear right away. Instead, they slowly sink into oblivion and nothing can be rolled on that area for a while. Hurry up!

Do check out QVoid which is another rolling cube puzzle. This may be hard to believe - but it's completely different from Dice Jockey. I reviewed that more than 2 years ago: http://gottasolveit.blogspot.com/2011/08/qvoid-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-puzzle-app.html

10: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

10 comes from http://www.iojoe.com/10/  The object is to slide the tiles to add up to 10. Pretty simple right?  When a block becomes 10 - it stays put.

Blocks slide until they hit a wall, or a 10 block or crash into another number and merge.

A 5 cannot crash into an 8. But if a 5 crashes into a 4, it becomes a 9.

This is problematic when you've got a 1 that must merge with a 9 in another sector.

I was not expecting much from 10. However, I am much impressed.

10 from iojoe is challenging and fun. There are some 140 puzzle levels. Right now I've done about 100 of them.  It's a winner. And it's free too! At least for now. So hurry up and download it.  The graphics are good too.

Pathika: free puzzle app game for the iphone, ipad

Sercan Åžengün recently contacted me from Turkey about his new free puzzle app game Pathika.

See the yin/yang image? It has nothing to do with the puzzle.

Pathika is a maze/topology/color-mixing puzzle game.

Look at the third image. See the white circle with the black dot? You must get it into the red circle. You must travel over every space. (Unless it's a black square - see the 4th image.) Gray squares must be crossed twice. Step on a yellow square, and you turn yellow. If you cross into a blank square with a  white border - your color goes back to white.

See the diamonds? Those are teleporters.

Look at the last image. See the blue/yellow square? When you first land on it, your man will turn blue. The second landing - you turn yellow.

Pathika has 50 free levels. I solved them all in about 45 minutes. Keep in mind, I've done thousands of topology puzzles over the years. There are some level packs if you wish to continue.

Pathika is fun, innovative and very well done. You should definitely give it a chance.

Tip Tap Overlap: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Ben from http://topapplabs.com/TAL_HOME_PAGE/TalHomePage.html recently contacted me about their new game Tip Tap Overlap.

Objective: look at the bronze square.  You must rotate and flip the red, blue, green & yellow squares to match the pattern in the bronze square.  The gray square keeps track of where your symbols are at the moment.

Tip Tap Overlap has grid sizes of 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5.  The 3x3's are easy but perfect for young puzzlers. I've done 14 out of the 50 available.  There are 150 4x4s:  I did 1 of them.

The 5x5's are naturally the hardest. Of the 150 levels, I've done 39 of them, including the last (and presumably the hardest) 8 levels. They're not too hard. I spent just a couple of minutes on each. I did get stuck - but mildly. Why? Because one tile might appear to have 2 correct orientations.

Tip Tap Overlap has good graphics. It's presented very well.  And I think you should give it a try because it's so different from other puzzle apps out there.

Ion: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Ion is a free puzzle app game that's kind of interesting. The object is to stay alive by lining up colored discs from any corner to the center. You do this by rotating discs.

After each rotation, more colored balls are randomly generated. You lose when the board fills up.

I played this for about 30 minutes and did not lose.

Ion is an interesting puzzle game, but it's too easy.  Let me know how you like it.

Pudding Monsters: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Pudding Monsters is a puzzle app game from the makers of Cut The Rope.

The object is to slide the little monsters to create one big blob monster.  When you slide them up, they will slide until they hit an obstacle.  If no obstacle exists, game over.

Ideally, your big blob monster will cover the 3 Xs.  If not, you still get credit for solving the level, you just won't get many stars.

And that's the problem with this type of puzzle: there are too many multiple solutions.

There are 125 levels. I've done 52 of them. I imagine that they're going to get tougher. But I am not feeling the vibe.

Nevertheless, Pudding Monsters does have some interesting puzzling elements.

UPDATE:
Robert Dancer is a fan of this blog and sent me this note:

G’day Tom!

Thanks again for the reviews… As regards Pudding Monsters, I love it… And there are a few extra layers of interest once you get a bit further through it… One is that in some of the later sets you get “magnetic” puddings, and in others you get “muscleman” puddings that can move some of the other objects in the game (I have finished all 125). But that’s not the best…

After a certain number of levels has been finished (can’t remember how many offhand) a second level of challenge opens up. As you pointed out, with many of the earlier levels (and quite a few of the later ones too) there are numerous solutions, and that you can get through without getting 3 x “X”. It is obvious that in some cases it is possible to find a solution with 0, 1, 2 and 3 Xs. Once you get to a certain point, you can go back and do all the levels, and if you manage to find _all_ of the possibilities (i.e. 0, 1, 2, and 3 Xs, or fewer if it is not possible), then you get a Crown for that level… This is a lot tougher…! I still don’t have crowns for all the levels (from memory I think I am missing about 5…). Adds another dimension….!

Paint it Back: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

About a month ago Edward Brown from http://casuallabs.com/wp/?page_id=24 contacted me about his new free puzzle app game called Paint It Back.  He sent me a promo code for the demo version, so I've been playing it a while.

If you're a puzzler, you've probably seen this type of puzzle many times.  The first 30 paintings are free, then you can download the level packs.

There are some very good features about Paint It Back.

1. When you are swiping a row or column with paint - the graphics are very cool. Download it just to check that out.

2. Some paintings can be done at a 'normal' level or 'pro' level. So you get to choose the difficulty.

3. By far my favorite feature is the ability to sync your progress over different devices. This has been a sore point for me when I converted from the ipod touch to the ipad. All my progress on so many games was basically gone.

Right now I've solved about 25 paintings.

Blinky's Escape: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Blinky's Escape seems like a fun, old-school type of puzzle game.

Tap the green squares away to let the yellow squares fall down. Help Blinky escape to the exit.

There are 16 levels. I could not do level 5 and the program wouldn't let me skip it. Robert Alvarez, the developer, sent me a hint.

I got to level 9 which has a time element. After 10 times - maybe more - I did it.  Level 10 is similar and I'm stopping there.

Blinky's Escape is definitely fun and worth your time - especially if you like your puzzles to have an arcade element to it.

Help Me Fly: puzzle app game for ipad, iphone

Help Me Fly comes from the good people at http://funtomic.com/
The object is to connect the battery to the plane to charge it with connecting rods. On higher levels, you will need to deactivate electronic fences.

There are 60 levels. On  most of the levels, you can solve it multiple ways. However, you will need to have your rods get near the stars to earn full credit.

I solved the first 15 levels without getting all the stars. Then found out that I needed to collect them in order to move on to level 16.

Level 22 was particularly interesting because it is actually a sequential movement packing puzzle. 27, 29 are  also a sequential movement puzzles. Right now I'm stuck in the 40's.

Ehud Rosenberg, from Funtomic, likes #19 best.

I should mention: the graphics and user interface are very good. No complaints at all.

Help Me Fly has terrific graphics

Disctrail: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Stefan Carlsson recently contacted me about his new puzzle app game: Disctrail. It's a topology puzzle.

Object: start at any disc, and clear the board by traveling vertically & horizontally.

There are 16 free levels. I solved them all in about 15-20 minutes minutes. I must admit, I got stuck on a couple.

Disctrail is a free puzzle app game with nice graphics. Give it a try.

Chroma Dyadic: free puzzle app game for ipad, iphone

Chroma Dyadic is a point scoring puzzle app game.  See the red circle? Tap on any square that's red to score points.

However, all of those squares change their colors rapidly. If your red square turns blue and you tap on it - bad news.

I actually like this concept. But this game just doesn't work for me.

Hexagonator: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Hexagonator is a very new puzzle app game from http://www.smileygamer.com/
It's an edge-matching puzzle with hexagons.

We've seen this type of puzzle many times before. What makes this puzzle game a bit easier is that the individual hexagons do not rotate.

This particular version has 25 levels. I played the game for about 30 minutes and solved 24 of them and got stuck on 25. It's trickier than I thought. I like the graphics and user interface.

I like this game - it's easy, fast & fun. And I got stuck on 25.

Amigo Pancho Free: physics puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Yury Koshechkin is the CEO of Qaibo Games company and he recently contacted me about his physics puzzle app game called Amigo Pancho Free.

Pancho is holding 2 helium balloons. Tap on him to start his ascent.

But first, you may have to manipulate some things above so he can travel safely. See images 2, 3, & 4 for examples.

I'm not normally a fan of physics puzzles - because there are so many of them! Also, there's a lot of trial and error involved - especially with timing. I am more of a purist when it comes to puzzles.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed Amigo Pancho! It's got a nice balance of challenge and fun.

The graphics are good. When Pancho rises up, his feet sway. Cute? I don't know.

Look at the first image: it says that it's been played over 50  million times on the web. I never heard of it, so I'm dubious about that claim. However, I always like promoters that inflate their popularity.  Note: I never do that for this blog! Do a search of 'Puzzle App' on google, bing, yahoo and this blog is always on page 1. Frequently, it is the first item.

But I digress. Amigo Pancho is a mucho coolo winner.

Candy Crush Saga: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

Everybody seems to be playing Candy Crush Saga. When a game is this popular, I'm always skeptical.

Candy Crush Saga is similar to the many versions of Bejeweled. The object is to swap adjacent candies to create a line of 3 similar candies. They drop out, you score points, and new candies drop in.

There are 425 levels. The objective for each level is a little different.

I've played the game for several hours and just completed level 50.  After failing it 5 times, I was locked out and told I could not play for another 30 minutes!  Of course, I could purchase extra lives, extra moves, extra other things that would help.

Candy Crush has become a money-making machine. People spend real money for these upgrades to feed their addiction. You cannot make a one-time purchase that eliminates annoying lockouts.

I'm going to continue to play this game for another 10 levels or so. Because it is a good game.  But there is little genuine variety between the levels. And I suspect something evil: I think that after you fail a level a number of times, the game presents an easy layout of tiles to keep you going.  I'm giving myself a few more days, then will delete this forever.

A much better game that uses a similar, but much more interesting approach is called Go Round. It's also designed to encourage people to buy things. But it's so much better done. And I'm proud that I solved the 100 levels without buying anything.

Temple Trap: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad

My friend Raf Peeters is the brains behind all (or most) of the puzzles at Smart Games. He has invented at least 2 dozen puzzles.  About a year ago, I asked him to please make them available for the iphone, and ipad.
Temple Trap is a sliding block maze puzzle app game. The object is to get your Indiana Jones archeologist to the exit. When the archeologist is in a square - that square cannot move.
Temple Trap has 110 levels. 13 are free. The rest cost $2.99.  All of the levels are different from the physical version.  Along the way, you can pick up coins and maps.

Most importantly: Temple Trap is challenging and fun! The physical version is an ideal compact size.
