Tangled: puzzle app for iphone ipad Review

Billy Lavoie recently contacted me about his new puzzle app Tangled. The object is to untangle the cords. Intersecting lines are wrong and turn red. Correct lines turn white.

We've seen this app before more than once. I believe Tangled is the only one that has a percent scorecard so you can track your progress for each puzzle. Good fun for kids.

Pixopush: iphone ipad puzzle app Updated!

You may recall that I wrote about Pixopush: an interesting puzzle app from a 17-year old. I have finished all 192 levels. Whew! They definitely get more challenging with 2 and 3 cities and complex paths. Click here for the webpage. A lot more complex than the image below.

Cast Equa: Hanayama Mechanical Puzzle of the Week Review

Click here for the solution. Oskar van Deventer designed this take-apart puzzle. Inside the frame is a ring, which is composed of 2 pieces. The whole solving process is really fun. Do get it. About 10 years ago I got a wooden version of this - crafted beautifully by Tom Lensch. I think I paid $90 for it. This version is metal and much smaller.

Fourbar puzzle app for iphone and ipad Review

Kevin Loewke recently contacted me about his mechanical engineering puzzle. The object is to move the blue circle and the semi-circle at the end of the red piece so that the white dot on the green bar will trace a path that will touch each of the stars.

I've done the first 7 levels - they are challenging. Level 17: I've tried this and cannot believe that it is possible. Yowsa! Obviously, I don't know much about mechanical engineering and wish that I did.

Update: I missed something in the instructions. The red bar and the other bars can be stretched! That changes everything! Last night I completed 22 of the 48 puzzles. Definitely fun. 48 levels is just the right number for this puzzle I think.Fans of Angry Birds should like this because it has a fair amount of trial and error.

There is a lite version. Give it a shot!

Find a Way, Jose!: free puzzle app for iphone, ipad Review

Ola Muchachos! Ehud Zamir recently sent me an email about his Israeli company Artlab, and their new game/puzzle. It's a sliding tile puzzle that combines a Mexican who has a distinctive mustache and sombrero and tequila. I'm sure somebody somewhere is offended. I'm here to report on the puzzle aspect only. So don't send me hate-email.

The object: slide the tiles around until Jose gets to the bottle of tequila. There are 15 free levels. 60 levels total. After that you can buy more. You can also build your own levels.

I've solved all the free levels - they're not so easy.

The graphics are really good!

Download it here.

Combination: great free puzzle app Review

Combination came out in 2009, but I didn't know about it until recently when one of my blog 'followers' alerted me to it. All I can say is Whoa! Best of all: it is a free puzzle app.

This puzzle has 397 levels. The difficulty categories: simple, easy, fun, smooth, tricky, risky, knotty, taxing, tough, baffling, havoc, mayhem, insanity, bedlam, cruel and superhard.

The object is to place the pieces into the grid so that red does not attack any other color except red. Right now I've done more than 150 of the levels. Mostly at the fun, smooth, tricky, risky and knotty levels.

These are plain fun! Everybody download it right now, give it a test run and send me an email how you like it.

Combination easily makes it onto the list of Best Puzzle Apps of 2012 - even though it came out in 2009. My list, my rules!

Bloxie: puzzle app for iphone ipad Review

Ivan Vassilev has created some very good, challenging puzzle apps - all within the last 6 months. They are all worthy of your attention. The object here: roll the shapes around so that the red rectangle can fall down the rabbit hole. The gold colored shapes: that's the frame.

200 levels. Right now I've done about 40 of the levels. No way I'll be able to complete these in the next 2 years; they're tough.

Ivan has also produced Red Mix, Spin Mix and tJam.

Cast Seahorse: Hanayama Mechanical Puzzle of the week

Cast Seahorse is cute! The 2 seahorses are not identical. A few readers emailed me to ask about these disentanglement puzzles that don't use string, rope, wire or rings: are they like the nail puzzle? The nail puzzle is basically a 1 step problem. These Hanayama puzzles usually require 4 or 5 steps.

Trust me: these are cheap enough that you should buy multiple copies. Always 1 for yourself. The others you use to spread the mechanical puzzle bug.

Here's the solution.

Spin Mix: Puzzle app of the week for the ipad, iphone

My puzzle friend Ivan Vassilev has done it again! First he came out with tjam, which is fabulous and hard. Then Ivan came out with Red Mix, it's also difficult, but maybe not as fabulous as tjam. I still haven't mentioned his third puzzle app bloxie, but I will post a review of that in the future.

Spin Mix could be the most fun! The object is to swivel the blue and red line segments onto the white circles until the red line segment lands on both red circles.

Look at the picture below - there are exactly 274 levels. As you can see, there's a good mixture of easy, medium & hard puzzles.

Without a doubt, Spin Mix makes it onto the list of best puzzle apps of 2012.

Hexchange: iphone ipad puzzle app Review

Hexchange is an edge-matching puzzle app. There are 120 levels of placing 7 hexagons into the given field.

I've been solving edge-matching puzzles since the late 80's. It's not my favorite genre. This puzzle app does a good job.

I solved a few of the puzzle challenges. Then I decided to watch the app solve a puzzle level. It uses a trial and error method and it's really fun to watch!

Kris Noland is one of the people behind this project and I hope they expand it.

A note from a reader - can you help?

Hey- love your blog- I'm always looking for great new puzzles- thing is I never seem to find them. You've turned me on to quite a few and I appreciate that.
I'm writing because I'm wondering if you've ever heard of the game Blobbo. It was an old game on mac that was created by someone named Glen Andreas, and it was my very favorite game EVER! It was perfectly clever, cute, difficult the right way... It really utilized all parts of the brain. I'm always looking to fill the empty hole that Blobbo left but it never seems to happen. Closest I've come lately is a game called Puzzling Penguins 2, but even this one is one dimensional in it's funness. I know there's a name for these types of games... It starts with an S and I always get it mixed up with sudoku ... But I'm wondering if you know of other games that are like this out there..?
Thanks for your blog, again... really neat.
Best,
Jen

Cracking the Safe: free algebra puzzle app Review

Cracking the Safe is a free puzzle app that's perfect for kids. Since D*B = 8, you then can eliminate 0, 1, 3, 5, 6 from both D & B. You get the idea.

There are 25 levels. I've done a few at the beginning and a few at the end. They are all at the same difficulty level.

If you are a teacher of mathematics, do give this to your students.

Unblock BMW, yet another version of Rush Hour

Unblock BMW is yet another version of Rush Hour. It's a free puzzle app with ads for BMW. Here's what's interesting: some puzzle levels have bushes that prevent any car from moving onto that square.

But it's not interesting enough!

A very good alternative is Blockwick, which I reviewed about 3 weeks ago. I was just playing it last night in fact.

Cast Starfish: Hanayama Mechanical Puzzle of the week

Cast Starfish is yet again another cool disentanglement puzzle that does not use string, rope, wire or rings. Woo!

Trust me on this: buy multiple copies: 1 for yourself. 2 to give as gifts. Last summer I brought two similar puzzles to a wedding reception. Needless to say, I was the life of the party - sorry cousin.

Hexagons - update about this puzzle app

Last week I talked about this puzzle app Hexagons and mentioned that it wasn't quite as good as its relative Rows Free. I also mentioned that I was the high scorer of Hexagons as evidenced by the Leaderboard.

Update: somebody passed my 11,000 score with 18,000! This past week, I couldn't stop playing it. And last night, I'm happy to report, I got 19,000 and have reclaimed my #1 spot on the Leaderboard.

Bottom line: this puzzle app is definitely worth your time. Send me an email after you've played it 5 or 6 times.

Pixopush: puzzle app for iphone ipad Review

Jan-Niklas Kohlhaas is a 17 year old who lives in Germany, in a small town in between Frankfurt and Köln (Cologne, for those of you who don't sprechen sie deutsch). Pixopush is his baby!

Look at the grid above. It's tilted at a 45 degree angle. The object is to slide rows and columns to transfer sections of road so that the two red square towns can be connected.

I've done about 100 of these puzzles. They're not particularly hard. But, there is a time element! Also, the harder levels have a restriction. If you see a white cloud on a square, that means that that row and column is fixed.

I will definitely finish all of the levels.

Shrooms: free puzzle app for iphone and ipad Review

Shrooms is a pure logic, chain - reaction puzzle. Tap a purple shroom and it will vanish & fire 4 bullets - one in each direction. After absorbing a bullet, Blue mushrooms will turn to yellow, then green, then purple and then will disintegrate and fire 4 of their own bullets.

I've solved about 75 levels. The game comes with 1100. Users of this will like Fling and Lunar Lockout.

Something annoying: the button to restart a puzzle is right next to the advertisement.

I think this puzzle app may make it onto the list of best puzzle apps of 2012

Boco Free puzzle app for iphone, ipad Review

Boco Free has 5 or 6 free puzzles to solve before purchasing more. The object is to get the small square into the big U. These are interesting, fun puzzles.

Just so you know, there's an online version that's completely free called Box Up. Click here to play them.

Six Towers Plus: free iphone ipad puzzle app Review

Vadim Bashurov published Bashni about 2 years ago. It's a colored version of the Tower of Hanoi.

Now comes Six Towers Plus which is essentially the same thing. There are 12 free levels. If you solve them, then you get 50 more free levels. Supposedly. I did the 12 free levels but couldn't get the extra levels. You can buy 1,000,000 levels for .99 Pretty good deal I think.

Cast Shark: Hanayama Mechanical Puzzle of the Week

Here's another fish disentanglement puzzle. Try to free the shark from the jaws of a whale. Again, it's a disentanglement puzzle without wire, string or rings. And the metal is so cool.

Remember: always buy 2 or 3 copies. Keep 1 for yourself. The others you give as gifts to nieces & nephews.

Inakube: iphone, ipad puzzle app Update

Ian McColm recently contacted me about an update to his puzzle app Inakube. Which received an honorable mention for best puzzle apps of 2011.

Here's what's particularly cool. The earth puzzle is just a simple 2x2x2 sliding cube puzzle, but there is a partial moon that rotates partially around it - not necessarily in an eliptical orbit! It depends where each continent/ocean is. Very slick.

Hexagons

Yesterday's puzzle app was a dog, so here's a good one.

Hexagons is very similar to SET, the card game of 81 cards. The object is to arrange tiles in a hexagonal circle that have either the same trait or a completely different. Right now, I'm the high scorer as evidenced in the leaderboard (that accomplishment and $2.25 gets me on the subway).

Hexagons is the sequel to Rows Free. Rows Free is awesome; Hexagons is a version that is not necessary. Still, I've played it enough and will not delete it!

Scroll down on this blog and look for Rows Free. That's the one to play.

Colorinth: free puzzle app for iphone, ipad Review

The object is to get the red ball from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner. You can rotate the tiles.

I believe that the tiles must match colors with each other; but I'm not sure. I have not been able to solve the first level - I think it's impossible.

If you can figure this out, please contact me to explain this.
Mario Ruffolo is the author.

A Plumbers Job: free iphone ipad puzzle app

A Plumbers Job: the object is to put the given elbow pipes and complete the path. 50 levels. I did the first 15 levels and got bored. Definitely for younger puzzlers.

Number Matrix: free puzzle app for iphone ipad

Number Matrix comes from the same people who brought us Number Sweeper which I reviewed about 2 weeks ago.

The puzzle: a Number Sweeper grid has already been solved. The object is to figure out which numerical bombs go where. Not very challenging. There are times, as in minesweeper, when you must guess and cannot use logic.

Cast Seabream: Hanayama Mechanical Puzzle of the week

I bought this puzzle about 10 years ago. It was part of a series of sea life disentanglement puzzles that do not involve wire, string or rings. Here's what the inventor said in 2008:
n the summer of 1997, I saw two mackerels that had somehow managed to get into the sardine tank at the aquarium. Watching these two fish unable to blend in with the shoal of sardines made me wonder if they were on a journey of self-discovery.
What sort of adventure will they have?
Imagining this led to the conception of six cast puzzles based on oceanographic subjects.
Subject: SeaBream
A sea bream and a mackerel enjoying themselves getting tangled up together. Take them apart, and then put them back together again.

D Blocks puzzle app for iphone ipad Review

The object of D Blocks is to swipe away all the blocks that have arrows within a given number of moves. Swipe the green blocks up (and away) and the blue arrows will line up nicely.

There are 25 levels - I solved them all in about 1 hour. I got stuck on some of the levels. Good fun. I'm looking forward to more levels. D Blocks was designed by Mike Singleton.

Blockwick: free puzzle app for iphone ipad

Blockwick was created by Kieffer Bros, the makers of Aqueduct and Aqueduct 101, which are fabulous puzzle apps. The object of Blockwick is to slide the colored tiles so they are adjacent to each other. Then they glow and you win.

60 free levels. I've solved them all and have purchased the additional levels. Does it make the list of best puzzle apps of 2012? Not sure yet. But it's definitely quite good and challenging.

FrozeN EquilibriuM puzzle app for iphone, ipad Review

My first thought when I saw Frozen Equilibrium: Lights Out with numbers. Not quite.

Like Lights Out: press on any square and that square's number decreases by 1 while the surrounding tiles increase by 1. The goal is to get all the tiles to 0.

The 3x3 grid is fairly easy. The 4x4 gets harder. It starts to get really interesting with the 5x5 grid. (I've solved all but the last one!)

Tricky variation not found in Lights Out: tap a square and that affects all the other tiles in that row & column.

Definitely worth your time.

100,000th visitor is it you?

Loyal viewers, this blog will soon have been visited 100,000 times. If it's you, send me a screen shot and I'll send you a prize.

Here is the solution page, but I refuse to look at it!

Sunk!: free iphone ipad puzzle app Review

Sunk! is a terrific puzzle app where the object is to sink all the enemy submarines while keeping friendly submarines from harm.

Place the red bomb first in the grid. This sets up an area - the surrounding 8 squares - for the grey bombs to explode. The free version has 12 levles. The paid version has 75 levels. All difficulties. I have solved about 35 levels. Challenging and fun!

Matt Carroll is the puzzle game designer. (I have a cousin with the same name!)

Easily, Sunk! makes its way onto the list of best puzzle apps of 2012

Car Valet: yet another version of Rush Hour

Sun Stones

Simon Strange recently contacted us about his new puzzle app Sun Stones. The rules and objectives are not posted on the app, so I won't spoil it. Suffice it to say, you have to figure out a series of puzzles. There is an overall mystic, American Indian feel, which is interesting, but I've ignored it to focus on the puzzles.

There are about 50 free levels. Not difficult. A few of them, I had no idea what to do, or how to do it. But managed.

Bottom Line: I've bought the next 3 sets of puzzles.

Pattern Puzzle: great puzzle app for ipad iphone Review

Pattern Puzzle by Hwang Gyu Sung is a topology based puzzle app with many levels of all difficulty ranges.

Each big dot has a number which indicates the number of times your path must pass over that dot. What makes this very interesting is that each path between dots can be used twice - one in each direction.

Fun, addictive, intelligent. Definitely one of the best puzzle apps of 2012

Cast Armour: Hanayama Puzzle of the Week

The object of Cast Armour is to disentangle the 3 pieces. Valentine's day has passed, nevertheless, you can give this to the one you may or may not love. If they can solve it, proceed! If not......you make the call.

Here's the solution.

Cubler 2: great free puzzle app for iphone ipad Review

Cubler 2 is a rolling cube maze puzzle. The object is to roll your cube so the yellow face matches the face on the plane. Notice in the other pictures that the plane is not always a plane.

There are 15 levels. I've solved them all in about 73 minutes. Right now, Cubler 2 is a fantastic free puzzle app for the iphone/ipad. Even if Steven Delrue, the author, starts charging $1.99, it's well worth it.

Definitely one of the best puzzle apps of 2012

Rows Free: iphone ipad puzzle app Review

Fans of Tripevo and SET: you will love Rows Free by Nickolaos Kechagias. The object is to score points by aligning 4 tiles in a row that have all the same properties or different properties.

You are given 4 tiles at a time and can place them anywhere in the grid. Each tile has one of 5 colors, one of 5 shapes and one of 5 numbers. Therefore there are a total of 125 different tiles that can be generated randomly.

Rows Free cannot be played quickly. My high score right now is around 22,000 points, which took me 2 hours to accomplish. (That was one game.) The person with the highest score is 'Chunky1948' with 125,676 points. In 2nd place is 'Joy1127' with 107,790 points. These are incredible scores. If either of you ever read this, let us know how many hours that one game took.

The paid version of Rows is .99. That's cheap and you'll never have to look at those annoying ads.

Easily one of the best puzzle apps of 2012.

Rows Free easily makes its way onto the list of best free puzzle apps of 2012. Bravo Nickolaos!

Red Mix: great free puzzle app Review

Red Mix comes from Ivan Vassilev, who also made the terrific puzzle app: Tjam.

The object of Red Mix is to get the red dot to the red circle. This is a tile maze where all dots can move up, down, right, left as far as possible. Red Mix has 200 levels - this will keep you busy for a solid year. These are tough.

Right now I've solved about 10 levels. Terrific job Ivan!

Cosmic Tiles: free puzzle app for iphone ipad Review

Cosmic Tiles is an action puzzle game. I played this for about 20 minutes. It's a little too Star Wars-y for my taste. Kids will like it.

Cast Medallion: Mechanical puzzle of the week

Cast Medallion comes from Oskar van Deventer. It is a double sided maze made from 4 discs. The object is to dismantle the puzzle into 4 pieces. Cast medallion was originally made in 2003 in plastic. It was prototyped by George Miller. The plastic version is more colorful; however it is more fragile. It is one of those puzzles that I won't let other people play with.

This metal version is indestructible. This one, I'll let guests play with.
