Are you good with sequences? 1, 3, 5 or 1, 5, 9? How about 2, 5, 8? . Swipe sequences to score points.
You can also swipe four 7's if they're next to each other.
I've played this game for just over an hour (not all at once) and scored 115,000 or so. The game is still going on because I'm not stuck.
I should mention: when you swipe a sequence, it will disappear and new numbers will fall down.
Interesting concept!

'Double View - The Hardest Brain Teaser Game': puzzle game app for iphone, ipad
'Double View - The Hardest Brain Teaser Game' is not the hardest anything. But it is challenging and fun.
You are given 2 mazes side by side. Swipe your man in any direction, keeping an eye on both at the same time to avoid the walls and pick up keys and then to reach the green target.
Double View - The Hardest Brain Teaser Game has 45 levels. I've done the first 25. The third set has portals - I haven't been able to unlock that section yet. I really like this concept. I'd like to have the ability to adjust the speed slower for my advanced age.
Now for the annoying part: every time you complete a level or fail, you are given an ad.

Make Me Blue: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad.
Freek Sanders recently contacted me about his puzzle app game Color Me Blue. The object is to roll the pieces so that the top is blue. You do this by swiping a column or row. They all move at once.
There are 90 levels. I've done the first 22 which fall under the categories: Kids, Beginner and Easy. The next batch are: Medium, Hard, Very Hard, Expert, Crazy and Impossible.
There are 2 other modes; I have not tested them.
Memory mode: see the blocks move and memorize the solution
When I first played Make Me Blue, my initial thought was: reminds me of Head Spin, another puzzle app that I reviewed June 9, 2011. Head Spin was just a 2x2 grid and the objective was to get the head face forward, right side up. Damn good puzzle game. Unfortunately, it's no longer available on the App Store.
And that's okay, because Make Me Blue is essentially the same, but with more features.
Great job Freek!

Find The Mafia!: math puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Adam Nagy recently contacted me about his new puzzle game app called Find The Mafia!
His note to me:
'The uniqueness of it is that it is based on a graph theory problem 'maximum clique problem', and maybe because of it its rules are extremely simple and elegant. (Yet it can be very challenging on higher levels.)'
His note to me:
'The uniqueness of it is that it is based on a graph theory problem 'maximum clique problem', and maybe because of it its rules are extremely simple and elegant. (Yet it can be very challenging on higher levels.)'
I wasn't sure exactly how it worked. I set the Mafia Size to 3 and then realized that I was essentially looking for a triangle - that is, the 3 people who all knew each other. Other people might know 1 or 2 of them but not all 3.
Look at the first diagram, can you see how the 4 people know each other and their lines equal/correspond to the rectangle with diagonals?
Look at the second diagram. There are 16 people and 6 of them are 'made men'. I've tapped on 4 people. Their connections are highlighted in blue. See the red line? Those 2 people do not know each other. As you can see finding the 6 mafia men is very difficult.
In terms of originality, Find The Mafia! seems pretty unique. In terms of playing this game, I think it needs more pizzazz. More graphics would help. There was a game I reviewed not too long ago called Nun Attack. I didn't like that game, but I loved the title and images of nuns with guns and eye patches. That's what I think this game needs. Something outrageous.
Attention math teachers: show this game to your students!
One more thing: I highly recommend the Mario Puzo novel The Godfather.

Chainphoria: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Amir Michail recently contacted me about his new point scoring puzzle app: Chainphoria. The rules/objectives are not stated. They are for you to figure out. Like Vaccine Case and Deadlocked.
Chainphoria seems very similar to DropZap and DropZap 2. If you are fans of those, then I think this is up your alley.
Personally, I'm not a fan of DropZap, but I know lots of folks love them. Chainphoria is a bit different. After playing it a few times and succeeding - I'm still not sure how or why I succeeded.
I think the graphics are very cool.

7/22/14 update: Amir just contacted me about the rules. Cannot simplify them, so here they are!

Chainphoria Simplified Game Rules
The following writeup omits some details but should give you a good idea of how to play Chainphoria. It is a work in progress. Please send feedback to a.michail@me.com
Learn 1: Basics
- Tap a column to make a move. All pieces in the selected column will become activated.
- An activated piece will attempt to activate a match with an adjacent piece based on color.
- When a match occurs, each piece involved in the match will:
- shrink (large to medium, medium to small, or small to nothing)
- become a targeted piece (if it is not already one) that
- wants to move to the selected column if it is not already there
- wants to move down (like an untargeted piece) if it is already in the selected column
- A targeted piece has two colors, one for matching, and another to indicate the column to which it wants to move.
- As a chain reaction proceeds, additional activation steps may occur.
- A piece that just moved in a particular direction will be activated if the piece in front of it along that direction did not also just move in that direction.
- A piece may be involved in more than one match in which case it will want to move to the column closest to it that contains an activated piece in one or more of those matches.
Learn 2: Recolor and Create
- Learn 2 introduces recolored and created pieces.
- A match may skip over a piece or a gap but not both.
- Activating a match that skips over a piece will recolor the piece to the color of the match.
- Activating a match that skips over a gap will create large circle(s) of the match color.
Learn 3: Followers
- Learn 3 introduces piece following.
- A targeted piece may at times follow an adjacent targeted piece provided that they are of the same color and want to go to the same column.
- When a targeted piece is acting as a follower, it is shown without a diamond.
- Following is done like this:
- follow piece above provided that it is not in the target column; otherwise
- follow piece above and left/right provided that it is a column closer to the target column; otherwise
- follow piece to left/right provided that it is a column closer to the target column; otherwise
- follow piece below and left/right provided that it is a column closer to the target column; otherwise
- follow piece below provided that it is in the target column
Standard
When you destroy (at least) 50 pieces, you will get a bonus based on the number of free slots in the grid after the chain reaction completes, all remaining pieces will be removed, the multiplier will be incremented, a new row will be inserted.Relentless
When you destroy (at least) 50 pieces, the multiplier will be incremented after the chain reaction completes but there will be no bonus and no pieces will be taken off the grid before a new row is inserted.Learn with a Friend
Two heads are better than one! Try any of the single player learn/game modes in a cooperative two player mode!Thursday, July 4, 2013
Space Dots: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Space Dots comes from http://www.coragames.com/games.html It's free and fun. Michael Contento is the author.
The rules of Space Dots are pretty simple: connect the squares in sequential order, and make sure your path covers all of the squares.
As you can see, there are 216 'Advanced' levels. I've done them all and all of the 216 Bonus levels. I also did the 216 6x6 collection. The vast majority of them I completed in under 20 seconds.
I really like these puzzles and always have. I think that Numeric Paranoia offers harder puzzles. But my perspective could be based on the fact that I've done hundreds, if not thousands of these. I did struggle on some of the Space Dots, but not many.
Numeric Paranoia costs money, while Space Dots is free.
The graphics of Space Dots are much nicer.
Download it!

Stickets: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Several of this blog's followers urged me to look at Stickets by Harry Lee.
Look at the first image on the left. Your task is to place those 4 little pieces, one at a time, onto the grid to form regions which have 3 or more squares of the same color. When that happens, tap it to make it disappear. This is not how to score points! You score 1 point for every shape that you fit inside. That's it. When you can't fit another piece onto the board, you lose.
I'm extremely impressed with Stickets. Simple, fun, deep, frustrating. My high score is 137. And yet, I've also had very low scores of 15.
What I've just described is the Space mode. It's the most fun. The Time mode is okay, but not my thing.
The Puzzle mode consists of some 8 or 9 very different puzzles - related to the Space mode. I've done half of them. I keep planning to solve the others, instead, I gravitate to the Space mode!
Stickets is a very smart, original, fun point scoring puzzle app. I'm very impressed.
Update 7/10/13: I've got my high score to 308 which places me 16th on the Leaderboard out of 4000. But I know I can do better. Must make my parents proud. I feel the addiction!

Fizzy Factory: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Fizzy Factory is a puzzle app game from the good people at: http://hangzone.com/
If you're like me, you've done a few dozen laser game apps. Fizzy Factory is not quite the same thing. Yes, you must connect the red fountain to the red bottle - represented by the red soda cap. There are splitters, just like in laser games.
But the splitters work a little differently. For example, if a purple goes in, a red will come out of one hole and a blue will come out the other. However, if a red goes in, red will come out of both holes.
You can combine primary colors. However, mixing a red with a purple will yield brown. Brown cannot be split via the splitters into other colors. Just more brown will come out.
Fizzy Factory comes with about 200 free levels. I've done them all and collected 963 bottles.
A lot of them are easy. Way too easy. However, I struggled on a bunch. Fortunately, you can skip around and come back to it.
The bottom line: Fizzy Factory is fun!
There is a meta puzzle associated with Fizzy Factory. I did not play it, but here's the scoop: http://hangzone.com/the-fizzy-factory-secrof et-password-challenge/

Color Zen: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Color Zen comes from Large Animal Games: http://www.largeanimal.com/support#!color-zen/c16nl
This is a hard game to describe. It's a cross between Flood-It and Vaccine Case. I know that I told you to download those! They are terrific with Vaccine Case being outstanding.
You must crash 2 shapes that have the same color. Then the entire screen will become that color. Keep doing this until the final color matches the border.
There are 120 levels. I've done all 120.
Color Zen is challenging, fun and original. Easily: one of the Best Puzzle Apps of 2013.

NonoCube: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
NonoCube comes from http://www.graycode.com/contact.htm and is a totally free puzzle app.
Are you familiar with Nonogram? It's a 2-dimensional game where you have to color in some numbers on a grid via vertical/horizontal clues. They're fun, but I've never actively sought them out.
NonoCube is essentially the same idea, but in 3 dimensions. You must create a shape. To do that, you will 'shield' the boxes you want. And 'bomb away' the boxes you do not. What about the boxes inside that you cannot access?
See the red, green & blue arrows? You can temporarily hide some layers to get to the interior.
The graphics are outstanding. The controls are very good too. The puzzles are pure logic. Not very hard, but that's okay. I've done 57 of the 60 'normal' levels. Platinum levels are available too. But they're not ready.
NonoCube is a winner. Download it.

Francois Dubuc recently contacted me about his new game app: Pop 'Em http://www.mobeedream.com/.
There is a puzzle mode. Tap on 2 of the same figures and they will disappear. The object is to clear the board using the given number of moves.
It's not very hard and we've seen this type of game before.
Still, I think they're fun.

Hyper Snake: puzzling app game for iphone, ipad
Hyper Snake is a tilting dexterity puzzle app game that was recently offered for free.
The object is to guide your snake onto squares to absorb them and get larger. The head of your snake must never touch its tail.
Look at the second diagram. Your snake is so large. How can it get that red square?
There are 6 different versions of this game. I like the Classic mode. I also like the Split mode which reminds me of Asteroids.
If this game is still free, you should download it. Even if it costs $.99, it's fun.

Put the Dot: free puzzle app game for
Put the Dot is a puzzle app that I do not want to play. And yet, I've played it for a couple of hours.
The object is to put 1 dot on the board. It will explode, like a bomb from the old video game Missile Command. Whatever dots crash into it, will also explode.
I've gone through the first 68 or so levels. Some levels are quite easy, others are super hard. Some levels require you to actually think. On other levels, it's mostly luck. Although, when you're successful, you may convince yourself that it was all logic, when it was 15% logic.
The program did crash once. I think it occurred when it switched to an ad and I rapidly tried to close that window. Still, I do recommend that you try this. The concept is not new. But the implementation is very good.

Logisquares: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
LogiSquares comes from Parker Crist, who contacted me about his new puzzle app game.
(It resembles Lights Out. If you don't know Lights Out, look for an electronic version on Ebay from Tiger Electronics. They produced 3 versions of it - really terrific.)
The object is to match the image in the top left corner. Tap on a white cell and it turns to 1. It will not affect its neighboring cells if they are white. However, if the neighboring cells (horizontal & vertical) are not white, they will increase by 1.
Each cell must be tapped once and only once. If a cell reaches 4 and gets increased again by its neighbor, it will go back to 1.
There are 64 levels. Right now I've done 1-48. But I skipped 41. I mostly do LogiSquares when I wake up and can't go back to sleep. After 45 minutes on LogiSquares, I'm good.
LogiSquares is a very good thinking puzzle with a good number of easy levels to jump right in. I think I'd like to see a pentagonal version of this.
Great job Parker!

GAMES Magazine - August Issue is now on sale
It's not the hardest. But for a variety of reasons: craftsmanship, design, size and all around coolness, it is simply a masterpiece that will be in a museum one day.
I have some bad news: you cannot purchase this puzzle because they are all sold out. However, you can buy my article on it. Strangely, the August issue is on sale now. Don't ask me why. Suffice it to say, the September issue will soon replace it. So hurry.
GAMES Magazine can be purchased at Target, Barnes & Noble and any other place that sells a wide variety of magazines.

Go Round: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad Review
Go Round is a point scoring puzzle app. You must score enough points to move to the next level.
This is a difficult game to describe. The object is to make groups of 3 on the concentric rings. 3 matching colors on the outer ring will shoot inward to become 1 on the next inner ring.
You can have a chain reaction. But I'm not sure about the exact point scoring system. This much I know: promoting a color from the outermost ring to the innermost will yield a lot of points. I have not figured out the details. Grouping 4 gets more points than 3.
http://www.littlewhitebearstudios.com/goround.html
About the scoring system - I contacted the authors about that and the extra things you can use, for example, bombs, when you're stuck, and they responded thusly:
'Yes, I guarantee all 100 levels can be solved without using a single booster, bomb or otherwise. I have completed all the levels without boosters, and one of our testers completed the entire game with only using a few wildcards in the last dozen or so levels, but no bombs. It took each of us about 25-30 hours to finish, and involved lots of level replays.
There are several things in the game that affect your points:
1. Combo moves, where you cause a piece to be promoted through several rings in a single move, are worth a lot of points. The more rings it moves through at once, the more points you get as a bonus.
2. A promoted piece accumulates value throughout its lifespan. If you promote a piece, not only do you get a score for that, the piece also gets a multiplier attached to it, so the next time it is promoted, the resulting score is higher. This is why the outermost ring is said to contain the most valuable pieces.
3. The game keeps track of how many pieces weren't removed from a ring, when the ring disappears. The more pieces you leave behind, the less each move you make after that will be worth. So if you leave a lot of pieces behind in ring one, it will greatly decrease the score of all your moves after that. This is to discourage players from simply trying to increase their score by creating matches in the centermost ring, rather than actually trying to solve the round's piece layout. Essentially, you are rewarded for strategic play, rather than simple color matching. However, the game is very much designed for you not to try and remove all the pieces from the rings, so definitely do not obsess over leaving a few behind. It's merely meant as a way to keep people from cheating. During normal strategic gameplay, it is entirely possible to achieve all the minimum goal scores.
All of the above work together to determine what a particular move is worth. It's very much based on how you've chosen to play the round, rather than static point values.'
There are 100 levels. I've done all 100! But I must confess that I did use my points to buy wildcards from time to time. And some bombs. (Note to National Security Agency: these are not real bombs; they are for a game.) I really like this game and think it has the potential to make the prestigious list of Best Puzzle Apps of 2013. But you'll have to wait until December 31. Sorry.
Download it! And make sure you budget at least a 5 evenings to complete it.

TouchNumber 3D: free point scoring puzzle app
If something looks like a Rubik's Cube, I'm interested.
TouchNumber 3D has nothing to do with Rubik's Cube.
The object is to tap on the numbers from 0 - 26 as quickly as possible. That's it.
#0-8 are yellow, the next set is green, then purple. So that helps.
It's fun for maybe 5 minutes. It will not make the List of Best Puzzle Apps of 2013. Not a chance!
But I like the graphics.

Free Puzzle Games!
Puzzle App Fans:
sorry for not posting much this week. I've been swamped with my day job and other projects. It's hard to keep up with the 200 plus new puzzles every week. Especially if you're hooked on one. Which I am. More about that next week.
http://www.smartgameslive.com/ You absolutely, positively, must go to this site and register for their online games. I've told Raf Peters that he should make them all available for the App Store. In the meantime, they have 36 puzzle games. At the very least, play Anti-Virus. Sign up now while it's free!

Penguin Plunge: Stuck in Antarctica: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Penguin Plunge: Stuck in Antarctica is exactly like Lunar Lockout from ThinkFun.
ThinkFun has been getting ripped off too many times. Too often, somebody comes out with a version of Rush Hour.
This is the second ripoff of Lunar Lockout.
Nob Yoshigahara was the creative force behind Lunar Lockout. I recall sitting on the side during an International Puzzle Party in Tokyo and he was performing a magic trick. He told me that it was 'so simple'. But I don't think anybody could figure it out. He was a character.

Hex Maze: free puzzle app for iphone, ipad
Hex Maze comes from Xia Pei Ming. It's not a maze. There's nothing maze-y about it! I suspect that the author used 'maze' as a synonym for puzzle.
Rearrange the tiles so that each one has the correct number of tiles surrounding it. For example, do you see the yellow 2? It's good because it's next to 2 tiles. Red means that too many tiles are touching it. Green - not enough tiles.
We've seen this type of puzzle many times before with a rectangular grid. So it's nice to see this. Also, the graphics are good.
In terms of 'puzzle fun' it's not quite there. Still, it's free, so give it a chance.

LynzFree: puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
LynzFree comes from Matthew Little.
It is an edge-matching puzzle with funky colors. There are 3 levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. In the beginner levels: trade the 9 tiles in a 3x3 grid. In the intermediate level: same as beginner, but some tiles can also rotate.
Advanced levels: they're not ready.
I've been doing edge-matching puzzles for many years. It's not something I actively seek out. However, I do like these graphics. Right now I've done 2 of the beginner and 2 of the intermediate levels.
It's a free puzzle app game. Kids will like this.

Push Around: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Push Around comes from Gary Rosenzweig. It's a Sokoban game where the object is to push the blocks onto targets.
About 20 years ago I paid $5 for 100 levels of Boxworld. What an amazing deal. A lot of them were easy. But there were a few that I spent hours on. #25 and 35 come to mind. There also used to be a website called sokoban.de. It had amazing puzzles where the object was to get box #1 to target #1 etc. as opposed to 'whichever target you want.'
Push Around has 12 free levels. Old school graphics. I did # 1 & 12. I like the fact that you can rotate the board.
$2.99 for the next 88 levels.

Impossibru's Blockoban: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Impossibru's Blockoban is a set of very clever puzzles. The object is to get your man to pick up the jewels. Slide your man -tilt maze style - all the way to the end.
Your man cannot go over a bush. As for the grass & water, you will need to slide platforms.
I played about 12 levels. They're challenging! The graphics and movement are too slow and sadly, this makes the experience less enjoyable. But the puzzles themselves are good.

Chain Reaction Saga: free puzzle app game for iphone, ipad
Chain Reaction Saga is a free puzzle app game. The scenario: a grid has balls moving in all directions, and bouncing off the walls. You must place one large circle anywhere on the board to capture the bouncing balls.
However, you have a limited amount of time to do this. I was able to do solve level 4 which required me to capture 6 out of the 11 balls.
Tough! Fun? Not as much as it could be. The graphics really need to be spiced up.

Clickomania: free puzzle app for iphone, ipad
Clickomania is a clone of so many other puzzles: click on a group of red marbles and they will disappear and the other marbles fall down.
The final objective is to clear the board.
Anybody know how many versions of this exist on the App Store?

Quicklation: free point scoring game for ipad, iphone
Quicklation is a free game. Look at the image. Find any set of numbers that add up to 22. Try to answer the 20 questions as fast as possible to get on the leaderboard.
Not brilliant. But it is fun.

Tinct: math puzzle app for iphone, ipad
Joshua Liddle recently contacted me about his math puzzle app game called Tinct. The object is to find some numbers that form a simple equation whose answer is already given.
The game can be played with a timer - for pressure - or untimed.
Suppose the target # is 15. You have many options: look for a 7 & 8. There could be a 7, but where's the 8? Instead you find a 15 & 1 and make a multiplication operation.
The dial spins. I really like the graphics. In terms of a puzzle challenge, I think this is particularly good for kids. Although I could see seniors doing this to ward off Alzheimer's.

Fanorona: ancient abstract game for iphone, ipad
Fanorona comes from Madagscar. It's very hard to describe. But I wonder, does anybody play abstract strategy games anymore? Chess has faded. And who plays checkers or backgammon?
You can play against the computer. After 2 or 3 times, the rules will make sense.

Squarescape: maze puzzle app for ipad, iphone Review
When I first saw Squarescape (see the blue image), I thought to myself: okay here's another maze game where you have to slide your man as far as it can travel, pick up an object, and then find the exit.
Old school computer graphics. As I whizzed through, I discovered the more interesting levels. Look at the orange image. Those orange squares can shift within their zones. Just tap on the arrows. Very nice challenging element.
Look at the purple image. The purple square shifts on its own. So, when you slide your man (the white square) you must time it carefully. I should also mention that if your man passes over an X, you die.
Check out the green image. See the 3x3 gray dots? If you pass over them, you will land on that spot. The 1's & 2's - wormholes of course.
There are some 100 levels. A lot of them are easy. A good number are challenging. 70 levels are totally free. The next 15 levels require you to leave feedback on the App Store. The final 15 cost $.99. I bought it. Right now I have solved everything except the very last puzzle, which I'll do later today. The bottom line, these are fun!
Squarescape was made by Jacob Koch. The game came out last year, but I did not discover it until very recently. Therefore, it qualifies as one of the Best Puzzle Apps of 2013. My list - my rules.
You will like this game. You should also download Woodhead, which also came out last year. It's very similar and it also has innovative elements. Trust me on Woodhead too.
